Fictiv Teardown Series
The best way to learn is from others. And if you don’t have a designer or engineer around, then the next best way is to learn from their work. To help customers make the next big product, Fictiv’s teardown series looked inside popular and interesting product so examine how they work and how they’re made.
I lent my life-long talent for taking things apart to this effort, hosting several written and video teardowns. As part of this, I had the pleasure of getting to take apart some products with like-minded engineers so we could really dig into how they were and why.
Bosch vs Phillips electric shaver - The electric shaver teardown was a really interesting look at two very different approaches to solving the same problem. But the best part was the shavers worked after I put them back together, so I got to upgrade my shaving routine.
Airpods vs PixelBuds - Getting these little things apart cleanly was a challenge, but with it to see all the complexity inside. The Airpods in particular took a steady hand to cut open.
Rylo 3D camera - Getting to take apart a product with one of the engineers who designed it made for an extra special teardown.
Robotwist - This teardown was a great example of how even something has simple as an As-Seen-On-TV jar opener can be hiding some ingenuity, particularly when you think about how a pile of inexpensive plastic can open pickle jars that would best most of us.
Segway Drift ekates - These miniature Segways held a plethora of manufacturing processes and design decisions to investigate, but left me wondering who would be crazy enough to use these.
